Team Fortress 2 releases new video “I am heavy weapons guy”

by

While I seen this posted on gaming sites all over, the only place I found real info on what the video was trying to tell me, other than “damn, this is some pretty good cell shading where it looks almost pixar good”.. as well as Valve knows how to make really corny comedy, then I found some real information over at teamxbox posted:

“We are pleased to announce that the next generation of facial animation technology for Source will be released in Team Fortress 2. By leveraging the rapid pace of advancement in PC graphics, videogames can now match and actually surpass the facial animation used in feature film and broadcast television production. We’ve released a video of this real-time, in-game, in-engine facial animation in action in support of ATI’s launch of the Radeon HD 2000 series. By running entirely on the GPU of the videocard, the facial animation not only looks dramatically better, but frees up the CPU to perform other tasks like physics or AI. “

For the record. What you are showing here has NOTHING to do with cel-shading.
A good example of Cel Shading is “Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King” for the Playstation2

Cel Shading is when 3D Geometry is made too look like a 2D Cartoon. 2D Cartoon referring hereby to traditional hand-drawn animation.

Pixar does 3D Animation and do not use Cel Shading.

“The Iron Giant” for example is a good example of a mix. The Iron Giant character itself was made in 3D on the computer, but Cel-shaded so that it would look Hand-drawn and blend in with the backgrounds and the other characters.

In 2D Animation, CEL-Shading is most often used for non-organic objects, such as vehicles or rooms, which only change in perspective rather than being animated themselves. The computer takes care of the perspective and camera motion and the animators can instead concentrate on animating the characters.

Um, I’d just like to point out that, that isn’t cell shading and Pixar doesn’t do cell shading either.

I was using general laymen folk terms for things that look similar (because the art styles do to me). My bad.

I don’t care what technique of shading was done on this or how many pixels are shaded in what fashion. I don’t give a crap at all. I JUST WANT A RELEASE DATE! I am getting this, and people will die. No need to say more.
